The Chevrolet Equinox has been completely redesigned for the 2018 model year. A new Equinox isn’t normally something to get excited about but this third-generation model marks the debut of some significant technologies for General Motors Company [NYSE:GM].

For example, it will be offered with an all-turbocharged powertrain lineup, which is a first for Chevy in North America. It will also offer a fuel-efficient diesel engine, plus a new 9-speed automatic across the range.

Equinox 2019 Overview

The vehicle rides on the SUV version of the D2XX compact car platform. The platform is front-wheel-drive-based but has the option of all-wheel drive.

Sales of compact crossovers motored past those of family sedans in 2015 to become America’s favorite form of transport. More than a dozen contenders swarm like bees to clover, striving to offer the best combination of features, functionality, performance, mileage, and value. What these high-riding hatchback half-breeds sacrifice in style, agility, and driving delight, they make up for in dog-hauling and Jet Ski–towing prowess.

Seemingly each new entry wrings more performance and fuel economy from fewer cylinders and cubic inches. This is especially true of Chevy’s 2018 Equinox, which is fresh from the ground up. Its new Opel-engineered platform trims 4.7 inches of length and hundreds of pounds of fat. Despite a 5.2-inch-shorter wheelbase, passenger and cargo space barely change. With a lighter load to tote, its turbocharged four-cylinder engine has little difficulty topping past mileage ratings and achieving 30 mpg or more on the highway, per the EPA.
