Ford Fusion 2019 Interior

Before the Fusion arrived, the Taurus was Ford’s midsize sedan. The Taurus debuted in 1986 and was received well by consumers and the press, becoming the 1986 Motor TrendCar of the Year, and selling over two-million units over the course of its first generation. The second generation arrived for the 1992 model year with a similar exterior design but had a redesigned interior, and became the best-selling car in the U.S. until 1995. Introduced in 1996, the third generation saw a bold redesign inside and out with Ford’s new oval design. The new Taurus received mixed reviews, and the Taurus ended its reign as best-selling car, making way for the Toyota Camry. The fourth generation, which was offered as a sedan and wagon like its predecessors, spanned from 2000 to 2007 and lost most of the oval design and featured an improved interior. No higher-performance SHO model was offered like the previous generations, and Ford ended the Taurus’ production in the fall of 2006.

Ford debuted a new Fusion sedan for the 2006 model year, based on the Mazda6 platform. During 2006 Motor Trend Car of the Year testing, we liked the handling of the Fusion but said “the car … hasn’t quite reached the top rung.” In a 2008 family car sedan comparison, the Ford Fusion placed fifth out of 10 sedans. Then in 2010, Ford introduced an updated Fusion Hybrid, with new styling and powertrain options. We liked the updated Fusion so much that it became the 2010 Motor Trend Car of the Year.

Ford Fusion 2019 Review and Specs

The Latest Generation

The second-generation Ford Fusion was completely redesigned for the 2013 model year featuring a new design and powertrains. When we drove the 2013 Ford Fusion during 2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year testing, we were impressed by the fact that it offered a choice of four engines, four transmissions, front- or all-wheel drive, and regular or plug-in hybrid, but did not like automatic transmission’s reluctance to react to paddle-shift inputs, the unusual brake feel, and the high price tag. The Fusion received a face-lift in 2017 featuring new styling and a Platinum and Sport trim. After our First Drive review, we appreciated the new styling, quiet and comfortable ride but not the fuel-efficiency and slow acceleration, unless you can afford the new Sport trim with its 325-hp and 380-lb-ft from a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine.
